Obama seeks money for nuclear weapons work
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – President Barack Obama is seeking increased funding for nuclear weapons research and security programs next year, even as his administration promotes nonproliferation and has pledged to reduce the world's stockpile of nuclear arms.
The administration on Monday asked Congress for more than $7 billion for activities related to nuclear weapons in the budget of the National Nuclear Security Administration, an increase of $624 million from the 2010 fiscal year.

north korean weapons headed to Iran seized
i'm interested to see what the response will be to this (if there is one).
North Korean Weapons were Headed to Iran
Thailand said Monday that an aircraft loaded with North Korean weapons was flying to Iran when it was intercepted in December but the ultimate destination of the arms is still not known.
Thai authorities seized the Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane and its five-man crew as it landed to refuel on a flight from Pyongyang Dec. 12. Found on board were 35 tons of weapons.
A Thai government report to the U.N. Security Council, leaked to reporters in New York over the weekend, said the aircraft, which had violated U.N. sanctions against North Korea, was bound for Tehran's Mahrabad Airport.

fully automatic nail gun
soooo badass.
This thing has blood and carnage written all over it. It’s ideal for fixing up the house if you don’t mind everyone inside ending up dead as a doornail. It can send a 6-D nail through a 2 x 4 at 200 yards, and as it’s creator David Wiggins points out, you could literally sit in your lawn chair while building a fence.
Comes complete with a hundred-round magazine no less. No, this is no nail gun. This is a nail machine-gun. And I don’t ever want to work on a home improvement project with David Wiggins. Ever.

Operation Downfall: The annihilation of Japan and X-Day
This is insane. In 1945, when Hirohito was planning on surrendering to the Allies, there was a conspiracy by Japanese hardliners to assassinate him and prevent the Japanese surrender. Had this attempt been successful, the war would have continued, and the Allies would put in place Operation Downfall, which included the use of 7 nuclear weapons (not including the 2 already dropped).
Operation Downfall
Operation Downfall was the overall Allied plan for the invasion and destruction of Japan near the end of World War II.
Casualty predictions varied widely but were extremely high for both sides: depending on the degree to which Japanese civilians resisted the invasion, estimates ran into the millions for Allied casualties and tens of millions for Japanese casualties.
On Marshall's orders, Major-General John E. Hull planned to use tactical nuclear weapons for the invasion of the Japanese home islands (even after dropping two strategic atomic bombs on Japan, Marshall did not think that the Japanese would capitulate immediately).
Colonel Lyle E. Seeman reported that at least seven bombs would be available by X-Day, which could be dropped on defending forces. Seeman advised that American troops not enter an area hit by a bomb for "at least 48 hours"; the risk of fallout was not well understood, and such a short amount of time after detonation would have resulted in substantial radiation exposure for the American troops.

Putin: Russia to develop offensive weapons to keep balance with U.S.
Russia needs to develop "offensive strike systems" to preserve strategic balance with the United States, without producing its own missile defense, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Tuesday.
Putin's comment, made at a press briefing in the far eastern Russian city of Vladivostok, echoed a similar call from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last week.
"If we want to retain the balance, we have to establish an exchange of information: Let the U.S. partners provide us information on [their] missile defense while we will give them information on [our] offensive weapons," Putin said.
